Historical Coffee Houses in Cluj

This time we did not bring a coffee place that exist today, but special ones that were the first to be in the beautiful, historical town of Cluj-Napoca.

In the late 19 century one of the most popular places were the coffee houses. Yes you heard me right, in the 1880s people went to this kind of houses to chill, have fine drinks, read or even play billiards. Let me call Cluj-Napoca in this article on its Hungarian name, Kolozsvár. During this period there were 6 coffee houses in the city, and beside this there were “coffee measurement” places. Here people came during the morning ours for their coffee, usually they got milk and biscuits beside it. The above-mentioned place was smaller and slightly more amazing insides, also you could not find alcoholic drinks. Their opening hours were from 3 in the morning to 11. The upper population was likely to choose the coffee houses instead of the other. We do not know for sure which was the first one in our town, but in some scripts, we can find the Tivolit coffee house. This was near the Bánffy palace in the center of town, sadly it was broke down. An interesting fact is that here they also taught fencing. The first classic coffee house was opened in 1870, named Grand, located in the Dávid Ferenc Street.

Folytatjuk is Kolozsvár kávézóinak felkutatását, viszont ezúttal nem csak térben, hanem időben is utazunk, ugyanis Kolozsvár legrégebbi kávézóit fogjuk bemutatni nektek.

Valamikor a 19. században nyilhatott az első kávézó kedves városkánkban, ami akkoriban csupán egy kisebb város méreteivel rendelkezett. Bár azt senki sem tudja melyik is lehetett a legeslegelső kávézó, a feljegyzésekben egy Tivolit nevű kávéház szerepel, ami a város központjában volt található a Bánffy palota mellett, sajnos azóta már az épületet is lebontották, amely a kávézónak adott otthont. Az 1870-1880-as években 6 kávéház üzemelt Kolozsváron, és a délelőtti órákban voltak a leglátogatottabbak, sok diák és munkás járt a kávézókba akkoriban is. Az első klasszikus kávéházat a Deák Ferenc utcában nyitották meg az 1870-es évek elején, és a Grand nevet viselte. A kávé melletti kínálat a következőkkel egészült ki: tea, csája, csokoládé, aludttej, tejszín, jegeskávé, limonádé, szörp, szódavíz és ásványvíz.
